Hoot’in Bento

I spent a LOT of time in the kitchen trying to make this work.  It started with meatballs with sweet and sour sauce.  I boiled slices of sweet potato to decorate but took them out to late so they became mashed sweet potato’s.  Which I then covered the meatballs in!  I can’t explain exactly why I didn’t just put the meatballs and potato separate, except that I like to stick to finger foods for convenience.  I originally thought I would make little kitty faces on the meat/potato balls but when I glanced at a can of sliced olives the owls popped into my head.  The center of the eyes are cheese cut with a straw, the beak is carrot, and the feathers are brown rice.  Add in some ‘starry night carrot stars’ and you get a hoot of a bento!  Experimenting can be fun but this took waaaay too long.  Next time I need a plan.

  1. Thanks Heather, Ara told me today that she would like to make me a bento!

Lia, the brown rice looking like feathers was just luck, because that’s all I had! Thanks!
